Why Choose Rugnet?
Why Choose Rugnet?
Sustainable vintage hand-knotted wool rugs that last for generations
At Rugnet, we specialize in authentic, hand-knotted wool rugs that combine beauty, craftsmanship, and sustainability. Every rug in our collection is carefully selected for its quality, rarity, and value—unlike the mass-produced rugs sold by big-box retailers and online marketplaces.
Family-Owned, Fair Prices, and Free Shipping
We are a small, family-owned rug business dedicated to making heirloom-quality rugs affordable. By sourcing directly and keeping overhead low, we offer premium rugs at fair prices, along with free U.S. shipping on every order.
Eco-Friendly and Ethical Rug Sourcing
Our curated selection supports sustainable and ethical rug sourcing. Most large home décor stores sell machine-made rugs that wear out quickly and end up in landfills. We do the opposite—preserving the artistry of vintage rugs and promoting the values of reduce, reuse, and recycle. We never promote made-to-order custom-size rugs, which require new production and increase environmental impact.
All-Natural, Safe, and Long-Lasting
Most of our rugs are vintage and made from all-natural wool, cotton, and plant-based dyes, making them safer for your home and healthier for the planet.
Why Are Rugs So Expensive?
Why Are Rugs So Expensive?
When you purchase a high-quality hand-knotted rug, you’re investing in an heirloom that can last for generations. Just look at the number of vintage rugs made over 100 years ago that are still available today—many showing little to no wear. This longevity is proof of their exceptional craftsmanship and durability.
The True Value of a Hand-Knotted Rug
You can spend much more at well-known home furniture stores and end up with a poorly constructed, machine-made rug. At Rugnet, we offer authentic hand-knotted rugs for less, and unlike mass-produced rugs that eventually fall apart, our rugs are built to last a lifetime—and beyond.
Hand-Knotted Craftsmanship
The art of hand-knotting rugs is a tradition, passed down through generations. Each rug represents quality and craftsmanship honed over centuries. Depending on the size and knot density, creating a single rug can take several months—or even years.
Premium Natural Materials
Our rugs are made from natural raw materials like wool, cotton, and plant-based dyes. These materials are more expensive than synthetic alternatives, but they are longer-lasting, eco-friendly, and safer for your home. By contrast, mass-produced rugs often use man-made fibers that wear out quickly and can contain harmful chemicals.
Should I Buy a New Washable Rug?
Should I Buy a New Washable Rug?
There is nothing sustainable or practical about "Washable rugs." They are made from man-made materials that do not last and are not necessarily easier to clean.
The Natural Advantage of Hand-Knotted Wool Rugs
Hand-knotted wool rugs contain naturally occurring lanolin, a waxy substance that helps protect the fibers and makes the rug surprisingly easy to clean. Spills are quickly forgiven and can usually be spot cleaned without harsh chemicals.
Proven Durability in Real Life
If you look closely, you’ll find vintage oriental rugs in high-traffic areas like historic hotels and even on outdoor porches—like the famous Claremont Hotel in Maine (though we don’t recommend using our rugs outdoors). This longevity proves how super resilient hand-knotted rugs truly are.
I Have Kids and Pets, Should I Buy a New Rug?
I Have Kids and Pets, Should I Buy a New Rug?
Have kids and pets? We do, too! At Rugnet, we understand the challenges of maintaining a beautiful home with active family members—and that includes furry ones.
Durability of Antique and Vintage Rugs
Our cat loves lounging on our antique and vintage rugs, and despite her best “work,” there are no marks or flaws on any of our rugs. This durability is thanks to the high-quality natural fibers and expert craftsmanship behind every hand-knotted piece.
Why Hand-Knotted Wool Rugs Are Pet- and Kid-Friendly
Hand-knotted wool rugs are naturally resilient and easy to clean, making them ideal for busy households. Wool’s natural lanolin helps repel stains and dirt, while its durability withstands high traffic and playful paws.
How Do I Care For and Clean My Hand-Knotted Rug?
How Do I Care For and Clean My Hand-Knotted Rug?
Proper care and cleaning will keep your hand-knotted wool rug beautiful and durable for generations. Here are some simple tips for everyday maintenance and stain removal.
Basic Maintenance: Vacuuming
Vacuum your rug at least every two weeks using a vacuum without a beater bar (we recommend cordless Dyson vacuums). Vacuum preferably in the direction of the nap, but don’t worry about being too precise. For smaller rugs in high-traffic areas, flipping the rug over and vacuuming the back occasionally helps remove embedded dirt. Avoid pulling the vacuum over the fringe to prevent damage.
Spot Cleaning Small Stains
For small spots and stains, baby shampoo diluted with water works well on wool rugs. Gently press the mixture onto the stain with a cloth and hold for 30 seconds. Blot excess moisture with a dry cloth or paper towel. For greasy stains, mild dish soap is another effective option.
Professional Cleaning for Entire Rugs
For cleaning your entire rug—especially delicate silk rugs—it’s best to use a professional oriental rug cleaner. Ideally, rugs should be professionally cleaned every 3 to 5 years. Professionals use specialized methods involving dipping the rug in water and natural cleansers, followed by careful drying to prevent mildew. This process cannot be safely done at home.
If you are in the Washington, DC area, we can recommend trusted rug cleaners who handle our own rugs with expert care.
